13.08.09 1.5mln Ukrainians work abroad
Presently, approximately 1.5 million of the Ukrainian citizens, 80% of whom are highly qualified specialists having higher and professional technical education work abroad temporarily, as a rule not according to their specialty, mostly in the spheres of transport, construction, trade and finishing industry, Labor and Social Policy Minister Liudmyla Denysova told a meeting of labor ministers of the European Union member countries and the EU partner states that was held in Geneva within the frames of the 98th Session of the International Labor Conference, ministry press service informs.
According to Denysova, with the help of mediator structures, only a small part of the Ukrainians receive jobs annually, 1-2% of the total number of labor migrants working abroad. “The Ukrainian government strives to regulate the labor migration primarily by forming the modern and mobile domestic labor market, on the one hand, and on the other hand - through strengthening legal and social protection of the Ukrainian citizens, who expressed a wish to work or who have been already working abroad. In addition, a state policy is aimed to return the Ukrainian citizens - labor migrants - to the Motherland”, the minister noted. According to her, completion of the new draft agreement on association between Ukraine and the European Union is being continued with the aim of signing the European Code of Social Security.
