According to data obtained from the Ministry of Immigration, in 2008, only 28.3 percent of the 247,243 people who received permanent resident status, did not speak any of the two official languages.
At the same time steadily increase number of English-speaking immigrants in 2008 in English - 56.6 percent of new residents in 2007 - 53.7 per cent and in 2002 - 43,4 percent.
The Ministry reported that 5.1 percent of them - the Francophones, and another 10 percent know both languages.
Economic immigrants know the languages better than refugees. Of the 61 302 economic immigrants, only 4.7 percent did not speak the national language. In 2008, there were 21,860 refugees and 46,1 percent of them didn't speak neither English nor French.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Immigration Kelly Fraser said that the increase in the number of immigrants who know the language, is due to changes in the conditions of immigration, conducted by Canadian authorities in 2002.
While the number of permanent residents in 2008 increased compared with the previous year and amounted to slightly 247243 person per year has significantly increased the number of temporary workers.
China still remains a country where the most immigrants are coming, but the number of permanent residents there gradually decreases. Also decreased the number of immigrants from India and Pakistan.
