03.06.10 Migrants in the EU sent home ˆ26 billion
Eurostat, the statistical agency of the European Commission, has provided new data that show that immigrants in the European Union, sent home remittances of approximately ˆ 26 billion during 2006, that is ˆ 3 billion more than in 2005. We have to mention that in drafting the report were not considered illegal and informal ways of transferring money.
85% of all remittances were issued only from 5 EU countries. For two years about ˆ 19 billion was sent outside the EU. According to a separate report by the European Commission, Poland and Portugal comprise the majority of remittances committed by immigrants from EU countries to their countries of origin within the EU.
